Hands down my favorite farm animal are my pigs! They have so much personality, they love attention back rubs, and to be scratched.
This is Porkchop. He’s extra special to me because his mama didn’t make it through the farrowing (birthing process) and so he actually lived in our house for about 2.5 weeks until I could make sure he was strong enough to go out with other piglets his age. He loved to swim in the bathtub and be cuddled with by the kids. Now he enjoys running around with all the other piglets and still comes running to us when we call his name in the barn.
Many people seem to think that boars are aggressive, but our boars have been outstanding and are usually my favorites. Each day you go out to do chores, call their names and their ears perk up, they look at us & come right over to get their backs rubs and ears scratched. I tend to give them a bit of extra attention each day.
This is Ehli – hands down of my MOST FAVORITE pigs who really won my heart over. Ehli is a Berkshire boar that we got when he was only about 8 weeks old and he came with me to all my classroom visits when speaking about agriculture. When I’d take him out of the carrier I brought him in, he immediately snuggled right up between my chin area and shoulder, captivating my heart and winning over the students and teachers.
Even though we raise different types of breeds of pigs Berkshires tend to be the ones that I gravitate towards because of their coloration, markings, personalities & docile characteristics. My pigs enjoy pumpkins for a treat!
